The 26th Anniversary of Armenia's Independence

On September 21st, 2017 the Consulate General of Armenia in Los Angeles marked the 26th Anniversary of Armenia's Independence. Among the participants were representatives of the Armenian community of Los Angeles , members of political and religious organizations, foreign diplomats, representatives from federal, state and municipal authorities and NGOs.
In her opening statement, Consul Armella Shakaryan expressed her gratitude to the Unites States for continuous support of market reforms and democratic transformations in Armenia's society since the beginning of Independence. She also stressed strong advocacy and constant efforts of the American-Armenian Community in the process of international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide as well as the significant role of Diaspora in strengthening of Armenia's statehood during the tremendous hardships.
State Senators Anthony Portantino and Ed Hernandez, California State Assembly Representatives Laura Friedman and Raul Bocanegra, as well as Los Angeles City Council members Paul Krekorian and Mitch O’Farrell gave congratulatory speeches during the event as well as submitted State and City Resolutions and Commendations on Armenian Independence to the Consul General Sergey Sarkisov.
In honor of Armenian Independence Day the Consulate General presented a special medal of the Prime Minister of Armenia to Dr. Akira Ishiyama, a medical professor at UCLA, for his valuable support and assistance to the Republic of Armenia and his contribution to the advancement of the Armenian medical field. Deputy District Director for the State Senate President Kevin de Leon, Mrs. Baydsar Thomasian has been awarded with the same medal for the services provided to the Homeland and the Diaspora as well as for strengthening relations between the Armenian American Community and the Republic of Armenia. The host of the evening was a general assignment reporter for KTLA 5 News, Elina Abovian.
