102nd Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide

24 April, 2017

On April 23, 2017, events dedicated to the 102nd Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide commenced in Los Angeles, CA, at the Armenian Genocide Memorial located in Montebello. In attendance at the annual commemoration ceremony, arranged by eighteen organizations forming the United Armenian Council for the Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide, were US Congressmen, members of the California State Assembly, representatives of the Los Angeles City Council, and officials from the Consulate General of Armenia in Los Angeles, headed by Consul General Sergey Sarkisov. Speakers at the event stressed the importance of continuing to work towards the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, in conjunction with efforts to aid the development and security of the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh. Consul Armella Shakaryan of the Consulate General of Armenia was also invited to give a speech.   “Today I would like to emphasize what we want for our people, our country and our region. We don't want to live in the past. We want to reconcile with the past as we forge a future. We cannot build a future alone. Neither can we build a future together with a neighbor that is dishonest about our common past. Despite our neighbor, who seems to be stepping back from the positive direction in democracy with the recent Referendum, Armenia is moving forward with the Constitutional changes making the Parliament the number one platform in the country, ability to unite ideas and notions of all able forces regardless of their political standing. We launched the wave of reforms to lead the society towards new economic and political freedoms, to break the stereotypes, to provide new flexibility to the economy, new approaches for the resolution of political disputes and problems facing the country. We are ready for peaceful regional coexistence, as hard as the road to peace may be. I would like to express our appreciation to the members of the US Congress and the Armenian American Community for their continuous efforts towards increasing the awareness of Armenian Genocide, voicing the importance of the Armenian Genocide recognition and emphasizing the connection between the genocide denial and the recurrence of this tragedy,” said Consul Armella Shakaryan in her speech. Those in attendance lay flowers to honor the victims, and held a moment of silence in honor of the 1.5 million holy martyrs. On the evening of April 23, 2017, the Unified Young Armenians organized a candlelight vigil dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide. On April 24, Armenian-Americans took part in the annual protest march organized in Hollywood’s Little Armenia district.  The Armenian community of Los Angeles was joined by American elected officials, the staff of the Consulate General of Armenia, members of community organizations and the clergy. Hollywood actor Dean Cain was also in attendance at the protest. “I was in Armenia six weeks shooting a documentary film about the Armenian Genocide. I am here today to attract attention to the issue of recognition, and I hope that we will recognize the genocide, which did in fact occur, as a state, or else it will continue to occur. This is what my documentary film is about,” said the actor. In the afternoon, the Armenian community participated in a protest march in front of the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles, organized by the Unified Armenian Council for the Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide in LA. Here too the Armenian community was joined by US congressmen, provincial and municipal officials, as well as Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom.
