“Remembrance Day” in LA County

21 April, 2017

On April 18, 2017, an event dedicated to the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide took place at the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, during which council members declared “Remembrance Day” of the Armenian Genocide. According to official document, April was recently recognized as Armenian History Month. Present at the event were members of social, political and religious organizations of the Armenian community in Los Angeles, as well as representatives from the Consulate General of Armenia in Los Angeles.
In her remarks, the author of the initiative, LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, said that the main goal of the initiative is to ensure that the historical events that took place are not forgotten. “Every year we join the Armenian community to honor those who perished in the Armenian Genocide, and call upon the White House to recognize the Armenian Genocide, which took place one hundred years ago and continues to be repeated in various forms,” said she.
In his speech, the representative of the Consulate General of Armenia, Valery Mkrtoumian, said that to this day, we continue to witness violence, intolerance, mass murder, and deportations. This confirms the importance of the international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide, as impunity paves the way for its repetition.
The representative of the Republic of Armenia also presented the initiatives undertaken by Armenia that target the prevention of crimes against humanity, highlighting the need for a common international struggle against this evil.
