25th Anniversary of the Independence of Armenia

The Consulate General of Armenia in Los Angeles organized an evening dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Republic Armenia’s Independence. Junior Ensemble, Arevik, performed Armenian National Anthem for the opening ceremony. The event also included a presentation and book signing by a prominent American Armenian writer and photographer Matthew Karanian.
Consul Armella Shakaryan presented the opening speech and hosted the first evening in the series of events dedicated to the 25th Anniversary of Independence of Armenia organized by the Consulate. After welcoming the guests, she remarked on the unity of the people of Armenia, Nagorno Karabakh and Diaspora, who overcame their obstacles with pride and dignity. "The 1991 independence referendum is one of the brightest pages of modern history, when the Armenian nation expressed its decade long desire to live freely, independently, and to have the ability to be in control of its own destiny," noted Armella Shakaryan in her speech. American-Armenian Matthew Karanian also claimed, "Independent Armenia granted Armenians overseas a voice to be able to participate in international affairs." 
Over the course of the evening, the Consulate announced the opening of an art exhibition by internationally recognized Armenian artist, Elizabeth Shahenian (Lizo), whose works were dedicated to the commemoration of Armenia’s Independence. Consul Armella Shakaryan presented Elizabeth Shahinian and Matthew Karanian with a certificate of recognition, and an Arshil Gorki medal from the Republic of Armenia Ministry of Diaspora, for spreading awareness, gaining recognition of Armenian art abroad, and contributing to the collaboration between Armenia and Diaspora.
Senate President Pro Tempore of California, Kevin De Leon also congratulated the attendees on Armenia's 25th Anniversary of Independence. Paytsar Tovmasyan, Secretary of the Senator presented the Consulate with a replica of the well known area- "Little Armenia's" traffic sign.
Mayor of Glendale, Paula Devine was also present at the event and delivered a short speech. She congratulated Armenian Community and Armenians in Diaspora on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Independence of Armenia and characterized it as the most valuable achievement along with Independence of Nagorno-Karabakh. Mayor also shared her memories from her trip and qualified Armenia as a ''splendid country''. "It always amazes me what a great heart Armenian people have, and how hard they work for their families and their motherland, and I am happy to feel accepted in this community, said Paula Devine. 
The evening also included honoring speeches, poetry reading, a special piano performance, along with the book signing. Influential leaders, elected officials, and prominent members of the Armenian Community in Los Angeles were among the attendees.
