An Armenian Genocide memorial was unveiled at Sunset Park, Las Vegas

15 November, 2015

An Armenian Genocide memorial was unveiled at Sunset Park, Las Vegas on Saturday, Novermber 14. The monument was created on the initiative of American-Armenian cultural center in Las Vegas, and was supported by Armenian Church and community institutions.
The monument is a replica of the Tzizernakapert one, but of a smaller size. It has 12 pillars, which represent the 12 provinces where 1.5 million Armenians were massacred by the Ottoman Empire between 1915 -1923. Sunset Park is the largest park in Las Vegas. Thousands of tourists visit it each year. Thus, it is the best place for having a monument dedicated to the Armenian Genocide. Let us remind that the groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 24, on the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
“The Armenian-American community in Las Vegas is donating this memorial monument at Sunset Park to the people of Southern Nevada so new generations remember the tragic history in order not to repeat such terrible crimes in the future,” said Adroushan Andy Armenian, honorary consul of the Republic of Armenia in Las Vegas.
Representatives of American-Armenian community, as well as officials of the state of Nevada and the city of Las Vegas were present at the unveiling ceremony of the monument. The attendees had a moment of silence at the monument unveiling to pay tribute to the 129 people who were killed by terrorists in Paris. Friday's attack also served as a reminder of why remembering the crimes of the past is important, and that by condemning them we can prevent crimes in the future.
"This monument stands today as a symbol of tolerance, human rights protection and our common commitment to prevent any crime against humanity.", said Minister Plenipotentiary Valery Mkrtoumian.
